Organizations raise hype for the Lowcountry Heart Walk

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) - MUSC employees and local organizations gathered Thursday to raise the hype for the Lowcountry Heart Walk scheduled for this Saturday.

The annual event is the signature fundraiser for the American Heart Association's life-saving mission.

Organizers expect nearly 5,000 walkers on Saturday.

MUSC is one of the biggest sponsors of the event, and MUSC President Ray Greenberg says they hope to have 1,000 employees participate.

"The heart walk is a great community wide event.  It reminds people of the importance of heart disease. It's the number one killer of Americans, the number one cause of death in South Carolina. Equally important, it's an opportunity to get out and exercise, walk at least three miles which the experts say we ought to be doing regularly," said Greenberg.

The walk starts at 8 a.m. Saturday at Liberty Square.
