JAMES ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) -- A horse found dead Wednesday on James Island was not shot, officials said Friday.
Charleston County sheriff's deputies were called Wednesday to 990 Bluff Road, where investigators found a horse with a wound to the left side of its neck.
The owner told deputies she had last seen her horse, a seven-year-old mare, during her morning feeding. Just three hours later she got a call saying the horse was on its side and bleeding from the left side of the neck.
A veterinarian from the Edisto Equine Clinic examined the horse, including x-rays, and said that in her opinion, the horse was not shot.
Investigators were also called Thursday to 1360 Brownswood Road on Johns Island for a similar incident. The owner was called and told her horse was on its side and appeared dead.
That horse was deceased and appeared to have a 3/4" slit on the right side of its muzzle. The cause of death for the horse is unknown.
"As
originally noted the injury appears consistent with a small caliber round
however that determination has not been confirmed," Major James Brady with the CCSO said.
