CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- A bittersweet reunion took place at Joint Base Charleston Friday.

Members of the original 437th Troop Carrier Group held their final reunion.

Now known as the 437th Airlift Wing, the carrier group was activated for the first time in 1943. The group played critical roles in World War II and the Korean War, including dropping the 101st Airborne Division into battle at the Battle of the Bulge.

"When I start thinking about it now, there is nostalgia there," said Paul Proulx. "I mean, come to think of it, you're going to see some of these people probably for the last time so you have a lot of thoughts going through your mind at that time."

"We're a very close-knit group," said another veteran, Don Wallace. "And it's just good to be here with the 437th, you know?"

The group called Friday's reunion the "last hurrah" because many of the 58 remaining veterans can no longer travel.
