CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) - Five months for a construction project may not seem like a very long time but for businesses along Bowman road, five months was more than enough time to notice a drop in customers.

"You know it's been really difficult for a lot of out patients to get here because honestly they don't know if we're open or not, but we are. We lost about 20 percent of business due to that fact," said Karina Cox, a charge tech with Nason Medical Center.

She says many of their patients would drive past the orange barrels, unsure if the driveway to the parking lot was a part of the construction. Cox says once the barrels are gone that will all change.

"When the bridge is back open we're confident we are going to start booming again," said Cox.

New businesses like Paws in Paradise have yet to experience business without construction in the area. Owner Brittany Marrazzo says she picked her kennel location based on the amount of traffic she thought would pass by.

"The road closed two weeks before I was planning to open and I didn't know, so that was a nice surprise. When they said it was going to be closed for five months I was a little discouraged," said Marrazzo. She says she looks forward to the bridge opening.

"It will certainly help the customers get through a lot more easily with the access to 17," said Marrazzo.

The Bowman road widening project is expected to wrap up next spring. Only two of the bridge's new four lanes will open Monday at 11 p.m. One lane of travel will be open in each direction. The other lanes will re-open in 2013.
