Items were up for auction to raise money for John Baker
AWENDAW, S.C. (WCIV) - A well known local man is fighting for his life after being diagnosed with Lou Gherig's disease, but he has a wealth of support by his side.
John Baker was diagnosed just six weeks ago. He has lived in Awendaw for over 20 years and managed the Sewee Coastal Retreat which hosted many camps for kids.
Friends organized a benefit event Sunday at Awendaw Green to raise money that will help pay for Baker's medical costs. There was food, live music, and a silent auction to help raise money.
"The community has been great. It's amazing to hear all the stories
about how many lives John has touched over the years, and he's just a
great guy, the community has paid back amazingly," said family friend Mary Schultz, who has known Baker for seven years.
Shultz says they hope to raise $20,000 that will all go to the Baker family.
