WEST ASHLEY, S.C. (WCIV) – Kids from all over the world are celebrating International Walk to School Day on Wednesday. Just here in the United States, 4,000 walks are taking place in all 50 states. Right here at home, Drayton Hall elementary students hit the pavement to take part in the big day.

"Our school is focused on the health and safety of the students and promoting that so we want to show the parents that there are safe routes for the students to take to school and that walking to school is one way that they can stay healthy," said Assistant Principal of Drayton Hall Elementary, Katherine Anderson.

Over 500 Drayton Hall Elementary students registered to take part in the event and parent Mary Whiteside says she is excited to lace up her sneakers and walk to school with her two sons.

"I think it's a lot of fun, my husband and I both grew up walking to school. It's such a unique opportunity in such a big city to have a small town feel where the kids can walk to school and be part of their own little community," said Drayton Hall Elementary parent, Mary Whiteside.

"I just want them to have fun and know that this is a healthy way to get to school, we talk about that when we do ride our bikes or walk to school. I just want them to have fun and do the same thing that their friends are doing."

Drayton Hall student, parents, and staff met at the Bi-Lo parking lot in West Ashley Wednesday morning to walk to the school. Mayor Joseph Riley and CCSD Superintendent Dr. Nancy McGinley joined the group for the walk. Organizers say Drayton Hall's walk was started by parents seven years ago.

Students and parents also got into the walking spirit up in Goose Creek. Participants gathered at First Baptist Church of Goose Creek and Crowfield Baptist Church.

The first ever International Walk to School Day was held back in 2000.
