Mount Pleasant considers exhuming remains

Posted: Updated:

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (AP) -- Mount Pleasant Town Council this week will consider a plan to exhume six sets of human remains buried along a street and to move them to a cemetery.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported the bones were found during underground work for a wastewater project in August.

The plan calls for the bones to moved later this month.

The move is expected to add about $30,000 to the $850,000 cost for the wastewater project.

Officials think the bones date from the 1870s and 1880s.

Mount Pleasant waterworks spokeswoman Nicole Bates says the caskets have disintegrated, but something with a name on it might be found when the remains are exhumed.
