According to Brittany Jeffers, “On Wednesday Jack and Sherry Kovnas renewed the vows they made to each other forty years ago. The vow renewal took place inside of a booth at the Tulsa State Fair.” Jeffers goes on to state that the Tulsa State Fair was the location of the couple’s first date and that they felt that it was an obvious choice when it came to where to renew their vows. “Chaplain and Director of the Tulsa State Fair, Walker Moore, said that this was the first time he has held a ceremony in a fair booth but he was honored to be a part of it,” reported Jeffers.

Clay Darrohn, Broken Promises representative, stated, “We believe that it is touching to hear about a couple that has been together for over forty years. Jack and Sherry Kovnas made a lifelong commitment to each other and time has not weakened their bond, instead it has perhaps made it stronger. This is why we believe that symbols that represent this commitment between a couple must also be made strong and that the bridal jewelry industry must hold their products to a higher standard, especially retailers and manufacturers of tungsten carbide wedding rings.”

Tungsten carbide was recently acknowledged by the Jewelers of America as not a metal, but rather a composite, stating, “Unlike other precious metals like platinum, gold, or sterling silver, tungsten carbide will shatter not bend if exposed to a high impact blow.” However, tungsten carbide is often advertised as being indestructible, driving the Broken Promises Coalition to inform the public regarding the contemporary wedding ring material and calling upon the bridal jewelry industry to disclose honest information. The coalition invites anyone who believes in marriage, vows, and love to sign their petition to demand honesty from jewelry retailers.

Broken Promises was established in April of 2012 and is a group of concerned consumers dedicated to letting people know about the brittle nature of carbide tungsten rings.
