CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- More than 400 Citadel seniors - including 19 active-duty military students - received class rings Friday.

The event marked the beginning of the Citadel's annual Parents' Weekend celebration.

"Like all alumni, you'll be proud to wear the ring, but the core values are your most prized possessions," Lt. Gen. John Rosa told seniors. "They represent a commitment to conduct yourselves in a manner that will make your classmates proud as well as the generations of others who wear the ring."

The 2013 class rings contain melted gold from six alumni class rings donated to the Band of Gold program, officials said.
