CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) – Students from seven different Charleston County elementary schools got a taste of college life Monday. College of Charleston hosted a science field trip as part of the Literacy Outreach Initiative (LOI).

The students were led on tours of the science and mathematics building at the college, and also got to see parts of the Natural History Museum.

Students from the Honors College and members of the Phi Kappa Phi Honors Society helped lead the children for the day.

They learned all about the scientific process by doing a hands-on experiment involving frogs, toads, and the students' own frog-like jumping abilities.  The experiment was centered around a children's book called the Frog Scientist by renowned South Carolina Biologist Tyrone Hayes.

Dr. Wendy Cory, an organizer for the event, said the kids were thrilled to see science come to life in this exciting context, outside of their normal classroom experience.

"Charleston schools do a great job, and they do the best that they can, but it's great when they can partner with people like us.   We have some facilities and access to things they don't have," Dr. Cory explained. "To see what's really happening on a college campus, they realize that several years from now, they could be sitting in these rooms."

The Literacy Outreach program was developed in 2010 in partnership with the Charleston County School District. The goal is to improve literacy for students in the Charleston community.

A group of fourth graders is set to visit on December 13 and 14.
