CDC: West Nile cases top 4,500 in U.S.

ATLANTA (WCIV) -- The number of cases of West Nile virus in people has topped 4,500, researchers with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

Through Oct. 16, 4,531 cases of West Nile have been reported in people, the CDC said. That is the highest number of West Nile disease cases through the third week in October reported to the CDC since 2003, according to researchers.

Nearly 70 percent of West Nile cases have been reported in eight states - Texas, California, Louisiana, Mississippi, Illinois, South Dakota, Michigan and Oklahoma.

Twenty-eight cases of West Nile have been reported in South Carolina, according to CDC figures.
