CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Gabrielle Bankston, 24, received support from her family as she faced a judge, charged with inflicting great bodily injury to a child.

In June, Bankston took her 3-year-old son to a local hospital after he began throwing up. The doctor who saw the boy noticed multiple bruises on his back, face, arms and legs.

According to the report, the doctor asked Bankston where the bruises came from and she told them he fell by a pond.

Once doctors discovered the toddler also suffered internal bleeding with a lacerated liver, the child was transferred to MUSC immediately.

According to court documents, the alleged beating happened inside a house on Juniper Street in West Ashley. Bankston lives in Yemassee, but commutes to work in Charleston.

Bankston told the judge she finished school and has bachelor's degree in psychology.

Bankston's uncle Russell Dunham says she did not beat her child.

"Other than being in love with the wrong person and not being able to see past the wrong, the person was doing, that's the only guilt that I can personally say," said Dunham.

Dunham says it was Bankston's then boyfriend who should be in jail.

"Bad choices, bad boyfriend it's just a lot of that out here," said Dunham.

According to Dunham, the child now lives with his paternal grandparents.
