SRS hosting deer hunt for wounded warriors

Posted: Updated:

AIKEN, S.C. (AP) -- The company that manages a former nuclear weapons complex near Aiken is teaming up with the U.S. Department of Energy to host a two-day deer hunt especially for wounded veterans.

Savannah River Nuclear Solutions' annual "Wounded Warriors Deer Hunt" is scheduled for Friday and Saturday at the Savannah River Site.

The event kicks off Friday with an afternoon and evening hunt and dinner. Many of the hunters live in other states, but organizers say most get treatment and do rehab at the Augusta VA Medical Center in Augusta, Ga.

Organizers say the hunt is rewarding for participants and the volunteers that help run it. SRS frequently hosts hunts to help control the deer population at its 310-square-mile complex.
