Group filing lawsuit against Sullivan's Island town council

Posted: Updated:

SULLIVAN'S ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) - Supporters of a smaller school on Sullivan's Island say their right to vote on the size of the proposed school is being violated.

Three members of a group called "Islanders for a smaller school" are filing a lawsuit against town council in the South Carolina circuit court.

Group members say a year ago they submitted a certified petition, including over 15 percent of the registered voters in the district, to get the issue on the ballot.

They now have hired attorneys to represent them and plan to move forward with a lawsuit because it never happened.

Town council members are standing behind their decision.  They said Friday night that the suit has no merit and are confident a ruling will be issued in favor of the town.

ABC News 4 will have more on this case as it develops.
