Man shot Sunday in Summerville

Posted: Updated:

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) -- A man taken to the hospital early Sunday with a gunshot wound told investigators an assailant shot him after he had stopped his car to check a broken headlight.

The statements are included in an incident report made public Monday by the Summerville Police Department.

Shane Newman was taken to the hospital around 3 a.m. by two friends with a gunshot wound to his left side, police said.

Newman told police he was shot in Summerville's Robynwyn neighborhood after he noticed one of the headlights on the car he was driving was out. Once stopped, according to the incident report, "a dark-skinned black male" approached him and asked Newman for his name.

The suspect shot Newman without saying anything else, according to the report.

The suspect is described as being 5-feet 10-inches tall and weighing 150 to 170 pounds. The man was wearing all black clothing and a ski mask rolled up on his forehead, the report said.

The Robynwyn neighborhood also was the location of a fatal shooting earlier this month.

John E. Hancock was killed on Lilac Drive.
