Mistrial declared in Beaufort County murder trial

Posted: Updated:

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) -- A mistrial has been declared in the murder trial of a man charged with shooting a man at a Beaufort County boat landing two years ago.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports that Jerry Lamont Scantling was on trial in the death of 52-year Leonard Green in May of 2010.

Circuit Judge John Hayes declared a mistrial Wednesday after one juror told him that her religious beliefs prevented her from rendering a guilty verdict in a murder case. An alternate juror also told the judge he had once worked with the victim at Hilton Head Hospital.

A new trial date has not been set.

Prosecutors are not seeking the death penalty against Scantling.
