CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) – Sandy has caused travel headaches for those trying to fly in and out of the Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast.

Here in the Lowcountry, 28 flights to nine different cities in the Northeast were canceled Monday.

It was far from a typical Monday at the airport. It is usually bustling with people heading off for business trips or heading home after a weekend away, but instead it was pretty empty.

"It does seem a little bit slower today," said Becky Beaman, Director of Public Affairs of the Charleston Aviation Authority. "A lot of people do fly out early Monday morning, go to DC, NY, wherever and spend three, four, or five days working and then they come home on Thursday night or Friday."

Fortunately the airlines planned ahead, so their passengers could too.

"They have had several days to get ready for this event unlike the spur of the moment event, and they have done a really good job of emailing their passengers and also calling people," said Beaman.

Over the next several days, it's important for travelers to check in with their airline before heading to the airport.

"Check a couple of hours ahead or a day ahead particularly now a day or so ahead," said Beaman. "The airlines are beginning to tell us it's going to take them a couple of days to catch up from this event."

An event that's being called once in a lifetime - a storm so large it will impact tens of millions of people, including those trying to fly out of Charleston International.

Once conditions start to improve in the Northeast and the Mid-Atlantic, air traffic should get back to normal at Charleston Airport.
