MONCKS CORNER. S.C. (WCIV) – Several Lowcountry ministers gathered Tuesday to throw their support behind a referendum that would build new schools and improve others throughout Berkeley county.

The Revs. Richard Harkness of Moncks Corner AME Church, Leon Love of United Methodist Church,  Joe McNeil of Trinity Baptist Church and Bishop Johnny Johnson of Calvary Church of Christ in God say Berkeley County students need an investment in their futures.

"We are asking you to see this for what it is," said Harkness. "It is an investment to the growth and betterment of our community. And we are asking you to please support this referendum by voting yes on Nov. 6."

Berkeley County school officials say if the referendum is passed, five new schools will be built to help solve the issue of overcrowding and renovations will be made to 29 others.
