NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) – Monday has been designated as "A Day of Giving" for ABC, ABC News 4 and the American Red Cross.

Hurricane Sandy has affected millions, which is why the Red Cross needs help from people across the country including people here in the Lowcountry.

One of the ways that people can help is to donate monetarily.

"The money allows us to allocate the resources the volunteers and makes our mission possible to travel to the area affected by Hurricane Sandy to meet the emotional needs, the food, the shelter and provide those necessities in times like these,' said Christina Monserrate, Director of Communications at Lowcountry Red Cross.

There are currently 13 local volunteers from the organization in the Northeast and more will deploy as needed.

"It is important for all of us to come together if we can't donate money, donate blood," said Monserrate.

The Red Cross is also in desperate need of blood donations. If you want to help, there will be several blood drives in the area over the next few days.

"We are in a shortage of blood and platelets right now," said Monserrate. "Hundreds of blood drives have been canceled across the Northeast due to Hurricane Sandy."

ABC News 4's coverage of "A Day of Giving" will start Monday morning on Good Morning Charleston and will continue throughout the day.
