JOHN'S ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) -- A City of Charleston police officer was placed on administrative leave without pay after being charged with driving under the influence on Saturday night.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, Officer Sarah Fortier was driving her city-issued police car down Main Road on John's Island when she ran off the right side of the road, over-corrected and then veered off the left side of the road into a ditch.

Fortier, 31, was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident, Troopers said. She was injured in the accident and taken to the Medical University hospital for treatment by EMS.

Officials did not comment on the extent of her injuries, but MUSC confirmed on Monday that she was released from the hospital.

Charleston police's information officer, Charles Francis, issued a statement early Sunday morning saying that Fortier had been placed on administrative leave without pay. He did not say how long Fortier had been a member of the department.

The accident continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
