CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) - Mayor Joe Riley said Monday it's time for the City of Charleston to take responsibility in getting the 526 extension project complete.
The project would extend the highway onto both James and Johns islands.
"If we miss this opportunity, we'll never have this chance again and this region, the city of Charleston, this region will suffer forever because the traffic congestion will just get worse and worse and they will be grid locked in certain parts of our city," said Riley.
Riley said County Council has a lot on their plate, and 526 falls mostly within the City of Charleston, making the 'baton' passing a logical solution.
"It seems like there is a baton passing moment for the County that's got us to this point - put the grant in, got the funding, done all the studies - that's wrapped up. Hand the baton over to the City of Charleston. Let us take this for them, forward, and get the highway built."
