NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) – The former North Charleston police officer who claimed to be shot by two men actually shot himself, state police announced Tuesday.

According to the State Law Enforcement Division, Charles Edward Bullard was charged with misconduct in office and giving false information to law enforcement.

According to the warrant, on July 4 Bullard told police he had been shot during an altercation with two men at a carpet store on Rivers Avenue. However, Bullard shot himself in a suicide attempt, the warrant states.

The false information set off a tri-county-wide search involving state police.

Bullard was booked into the Charleston County Detention Center and faces up to a year in prison and as much as a $1,200 fine. He was issued a $10,470 Personal Recognizance Bond

The case will be tried by the Ninth Circuit Solicitor's Office.
