SC's Fort Jackson honors veterans with ceremony

Posted: Updated:

FORT JACKSON, S.C. (AP) -- The Army's largest training installation is honoring the nation's military veterans with a ceremony and wreath-laying.

Army spokesman Pat Jones says Wednesday's event at Fort Jackson outside Columbia is taking place at 2 p.m. in front of the Andrew Jackson statue at Gate 1. The traffic circle at the gate is closed from 1:30 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. for the event.

The guest speaker is Kevin Shwedo, the director of the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles and a former deputy commander at the installation.

Veterans Day falls on Nov. 11, but is being observed as a federal holiday on Monday, Nov. 12.

Jones says there are some 21 million military veterans counted in the nation by the latest U.S. Census.
