Man sentenced to 35 years in shooting of cab driver

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- A man convicted of shooting a cab driver during a robbery attempt in 2010 has been sentenced to 35 years in prison.

Rakeem Deon King, 21, was found guilty of attempted murder, armed robbery and possession of a firearm.

Solicitor Scarlett Wilson announced Wednesday in a news release that King had been sentenced to 35 years in prison.

Wilson said King called a cab Nov. 26, 2010, in North Charleston. Once there, King entered the cab and put a gun to the driver's head, demanding money, according to a news release from Wilson's office.

King fired one shot, which was deflected, and the driver was shot in the arm.

Police arrested king after tracing his phone number.

"King is a prime example of why people who have proven they can't behave while on bond need to be held until their trial date," Wilson said in the news release.
