SULLIVAN'S ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began work Wednesday to dredge approximately 17,000 cubic yards  at the Fort Moultrie Dock.

Officials say the maintenance work needs to be done every five to seven years to maintain a safe depth for the boats that provide transportation for staff and equipment to and from Fort Sumter. The corps is in charge of the project.

"So we were able to leverage our very small project with other corp of engineers bigger projects to keep our park service costs down for this," said Rick Dorrance, chief of resource management for Fort Sumter.

The work is expected to continue for about a month.
