CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) – It's the Yorktown like you've never seen her before. The second annual Carrier Classic is tapping off at 4 p.m. on the flight deck of the World War II aircraft carrier.
"It's the most complicated thing that we've ever done here," said Mac Burdette, Executive Director of Patriots Point.
With bringing in a basketball court, stadium seating, generators, and tons of cables for communication—organizers say this showcase will be a once in a lifetime sight.
"It really is exhilarating, most people have not been on an aircraft carrier," said Thomas Lee, Co-Founder of Morale Entertainment and the Carrier Classic. "Those that get to come here have an incredible time. They can't believe that the flight deck has been converted into a basketball court."
The second annual Carrier Classic will feature two basketball games on Friday. Ticket sale profits go to veteran groups like Wounded Warriors and the USO - a perfect match-up for this Veterans Day weekend.
"That's what makes it very special. It's all about the veterans and active duty personnel and having it on this weekend makes it that much more special," Burdette said.
Not to mention, the event is expected to give a boost to the local economy.
"There is an economic impact to the community estimated to be a 10 million dollar economic impact to South Carolina with everything that is going on here," Burdette said.
Organizers say spectators are set to watch freedom at play in an arena full of living history.
"It's an emotional reaction that people tend to have, it all wells up and you realize the magnitude of what this means, combining sporting and honoring the veterans and so forth on classic ships like this and it's a very exciting kind of tingling feeling that they get," Lee said.
The women's game starts at 4 p.m. and features Ohio State versus Notre Dame. The Ohio State men's team will take on Marquette men's team at 7 p.m. Friday.
