COLLETON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Colleton County Fire and Rescue responded to a multiple tractor trailer accident in the wee hours of Saturday morning.
Three 18 wheelers were involved in the collision that happened just after midnight on I-95 at Exit 42.
According to firefighters, traffic was building up from a previous accident when one truck swerved to the left to avoid hitting a stopped tractor trailer and ended up getting hit by the third truck, a Freightliner, which was traveling at a high rate of speed.
Firefighters say the third truck was going so fast, the passenger side was ripped completely off. The truck kept on going until it got stuck under the rear of the second truck, collapsing the remainder of the cab which was displaced about six feet onto the chassis.
Fuel leaked out of both tanks, spilling about 150 gallons of diesel onto I-95.
The driver of the third truck survived, but had numerous injuries. The driver of the first truck was able to get him out of the cab and he was airlifted to MUSC in CHarleston. The other two truck drivers were not injured.
