CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Charleston police were called to James Island Charter High School on Monday morning.

According to police reports, 17-year-old William Roetling got into an "altercation" with another student off school grounds after which his backpack was searched. The report says a school official found an "expandable pocket knife with a green handle and sharp blade three inches long which is capable of inflicting bodily injury or death."

Roetling was charged with carrying a weapon on school property.

Roetling's mother, Vicki Roetling, spoke to a reporter Tuesday afternoon, calling her son "a good boy."

"He does well at home and in school. I know his moral values and I don't believe he would have ever intentionally put a knife in his bookbag knowing full well that would land him in this kind of trouble," Vicki Roetling said. "I think it just got left in there from last summer. He likes wittling and that's probably why the knife was in there."
