Fans saddened yet hopeful for Goose Creek Gators

Posted: Updated:

GOOSE CREEK, S.C. (WCIV) – News of the Goose Creek Gators being disqualified from postseason play affected the community as much as it did the team.

"I'm really sad about it because they worked so hard," said Michelle Graves. "My son's been playing for Goose Creek for four years; this is his fourth year, his senior year, and I wish things could be different."

Graves said her son, just like many others, are disappointed.

"You know even when they're not in school they're at practice, they're in the weight room they're always constantly working hard. They're a team. Not one for themselves," she said.

The news took the same toll on alum and current students.

"I feel they didn't do us right because we got talent," said Tristan Ham, who plays on the junior varsity team. "I just know that we work hard. That's what we do. We make sure we do everything right."

"I graduated from there in 2010. Like I said I was looking very forward to them getting a championship a second year," said Shawnice Dinkins.

Across the board fans seem to just want this bad call to disappear.

"I think those kids work really hard and if there's some sort of clerical error that caused this, or some sort of oversight, it's a shame that the kids don't get to play in the state championship. And, I think they deserve to," said Michael Marek.

Goose Creek officials will appeal the matter at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in Columbia.

In the meantime, Dinkins says she will be "praying that they get to go play Friday and take it all the way home and come back with a championship."
