CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- If you're not sure what a tweet up is, you're not alone.
Professor Doug Ferguson teaches communication at College of Charleston and studies social media.
"It's a convenient term for people who meet through social media, to then meet in real life," Ferguson said.
He said before social media was around, niche groups and people with similar interests may not have known each other existed.
But that doesn't hold true anymore, thanks to social media. For most, the Internet is just the beginning.
"Most people want to, at some point, see the person face to face. It may not be satisfying to know someone for five years only online," Ferguson said.
At ABC News 4, we're doing our own Tweet Up so we can meet all of you, whom we may only know from the computer and phone screen. Instead, we want to meet face to face at Mellow Mushroom in West Ashley.
"The station also recognized an opportunity to get to know the people we're following and that follow us," said Crystal Bruce, ABC News 4 promotions producer and event coordinator.
AAA, the S.C. Highway Patrol and Homeland Security will also be at the Tweet Up to get you ready for holiday travel.
But there may be an even better reason to come than advice, pizza and socializing.
"Viewers want to see people from TV up close and personal – if only to see if they look the same," Ferguson said.
The event goes from 5 to 7 p.m., or later at the Mellow Mushroom Avondale location. Chief Meteorologist Dave Williams will broadcast live from the Tweet Up.
