CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- It's been 150 years since the Civil War and would you believe there is talk again of South Carolina seceding from the Union?

What's more, a White House-sponsored website is the place where it all began.

More than 13,600 people in the Palmetto State have signed the petition. It comes with a request of secession and a request for South Carolina to form its own sovereign government.

"They put this web site up to get feedback from citizens and when you ask for feedback you never know what you're going to get," said Gibbs Knotts, a department chair in political science at the College of Charleston.

Knotts says while petitions like these are also gaining ground in other states, he doesn't see it as a common occurrence following an election.

"I think everybody is allowed their opinions, so no, I don't think there's anything wrong with it at all," said Ashley Hill.

"I'm not happy with what happened in the election, but I wouldn't go to that extent," Ascanio Serena said.

It could simply be another way for 13,000 and counting to be heard.

"People who believe it, I definitely respect their reasons why they're doing it," said Austin Brady. "I think it's more so a protest to the election."

Then again it's not the first time South Carolina has gone down this road.

"The states in the deep south, areas that were big players in the Civil War, are where you see the most number of signatures for the petition," said Knotts. "This is a place that's very individualistic, conservative, in general; it's a place that's always been skeptical of national government."

So if the petition is any indication, things may stay that way.

If the petition reaches 25,000 signatures by Dec. 10, the White House must recognize it and issue a response.
