Man found guilty in 2010 shooting, burglary in Ravenel

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- A Charleston County jury has found a man guilty of attempted murder, first-degree burglary, kidnapping and armed robbery for his role in an incident in 2010 in Ravenel.

Prosecutors say Akeem O'Mar Smith, 26, and another man took part in a burglary Oct. 2, 2010, where a woman returned to her home in Ravenel early in the morning and was forced back into the home.

One man ransacked the home looking for money.

There later was a shootout between the husband of the victim and the suspects, according to court officials.

"The DNA evidence put him there," assistant Solicitor Timmy Finch said, referring to Smith. "The victim's story was supported by circumstantial forensic evidence. In crimes like this it takes a lot of bravery for the victims to come forward to participate.

"Their strength to put their story out there helped our office take a violent criminal off the streets."
