CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) - Two people are dead after a Sunday morning car crash in Berkeley County.

Officials with the Highway Patrol say a Jeep ran off the road and hit a tree.

The accident happened around 10:10 a.m. Sunday on Cainhoy Road.

Highway patrol officials say the crash is still being investigated, but it appears the driver and the passenger were not wearing seatbelts.

According to an update from Berkeley County Corner Bill Salisbury, the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee was travelling north on Cainhoy Rd. when it ran off the right side of the road and hit a tree.

Salisbury says two brothers were killed in the accident and were pronounced dead on the scene

He says the driver was 19-year-old Matthew Richardson and the passenger was 17-year-old Kelvin Richardson.  Both were from Wando and died of blunt force body trauma and were not wearing seat belts.

Matthew was a 2011 graduate of Hanahan High School and Kelvin was a junior, according to Susan Haire with Berkeley County Schools.

Hanahan High School has implemented a crisis response plan for students and staff that will bring additional couselors to the school on Monday.  Counseling and grief support will continue to be available Tuesday.

"On behalf of the district, I offer my deepest condolences to the Richardson family," expressed Berkeley County School District Superintendent Dr. Rodney Thompson.   "During this time of indescribable loss and tragedy, our thoughts and prayers are with the young men's loved ones and the entire Hanahan community."
