SC inmates learning how to care for horses

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina's prison system is showing off more than a dozen retired thoroughbred horses currently being cared for by the state's inmates.

Officials are holding an open house at Wateree River Correctional Institution on Tuesday. Prison officials say inmates care for the horses, which are being put up for adoption by the South Carolina Committee of the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation.

The Second Chances program gives carefully selected prisoners hands-on instruction in the care, feeding, and handling of retired racing horses. Organizers say inmates who complete the program can use the skills they learn after they're released from prison.

The program got started in 2004. In all, there are more than 40 horses at the prison facility.
