CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) – The holiday shopping frenzy is upon us.

As big box stores advertise their Black Friday specials, small  shops are hoping to also cash in this holiday weekend.

"When you spend $1 on a local item in a local business it generates $6 for the community. It's huge for our local economy," Elizabeth Royal, operation manager of Wonder Works said.

The toy store has multiple locations and will offer deals to compete with the after-Thanksgiving holiday shopping craze.

"From 8 to 9 a.m., it will be 20 percent off the entire store, and from 9 to 10 it will be 10 percent off entire store."

Local shops throughout the Lowcountry want shoppers to think small and walk through their doors this busy holiday weekend.

Saturday has been dubbed nationally as small business Saturday.

"It's a really good time to walk King Street and discover what you've been missing," Hampden Clothing shop owner Stacy Smallwood said.

Smallwood is opening a new store next to the shop Friday called James, and will have special promotions that extend into Saturday.

"This Saturday starts our 40 percent off shoes handbags, jewelry and clothing. They are all on sale," she said.

One shopper on King Street Wednesday said she always chooses to shop local.

"We love shopping, my 16-year-old daughter and I. We love the local flair and the feel of what they have versus a big mall," Katherine Goode said.

The customer service is a big reason why many choose to shop local - and a reason that businesses hope shoppers will stop in this weekend.

"We thrive on wanting to help every single person who walks through the door. We will find you whatever you need if can't find it here we will send you somewhere can," Royal said.

The organization, Lowcountry Local First, is challenging shoppers to buy local. Through December 25th, the group is asking people shift 10 percent of their holiday spending to local businesses.
