SC Lottery employee charged with embezzlement

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCIV) -- Agents with The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division have arrested a Columbia man they say embezzled over $10,000 from the state lottery.

According to court documents, between April of 2010 and August of 2012, 54-year-old Anthony J. McNeil used his position within the finance section of the South Carolina Education Lottery to collect payments owed and keep them for himself.

SLED officials say an internal audit showed that invoices of retail partners were "manipulated and altered" in the computer system causing collections to not be taken from some retailers while others were over charged.

Officials say that's when McNeil would contact these retailers, tell them there was a glitch and have them deposit funds into an account he held.

McNeil  faces up to 10 years in prison if found guilty.
