MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) – Christmas is right around the corner and there are hundreds of Lowcountry families that, without help, would not be able to have a Christmas morning.

The non-profit group, Families Helping Families, gives the gift of hope to around 800 families in the Lowcountry by providing them with gifts to put under the Christmas tree. The program pairs families in need with a sponsor family.

"Anybody who is in crisis, who had issues come up or family problems, they are basically all below the poverty line and they just need the assistance and basics a lot of the time - clothing, pants, socks, toiletries, laundry detergent - anything that you may have but a lot of people just don't at the holidays," said Matt DiLucia of Families Helping Families.

There are currently about 300 families left to be adopted and the size of the families up for adoption range from two to eight people. The average expected amount to spend on each person is roughly $25 to $50 dollars.

Families range from parents with young kids to senior citizens.

"We need so much, anything is being provided for us is thankful and joyous and we really would like for some of that to happen during the holiday time," said Johnetta Graham, who lives in the Senior Center on Meeting Street that is participating in the Families Helping Families program.

"It can be hard when you don't have, if you can get it, it's wonderful and we're really in need for a lot of things to tell you the truth."

Gifts can include anything from basic necessities like coats, toiletries and food, to toys for the kids.

New this year, Wonder Works is offering a 10 percent discount to any toys bought for the Families Helping Families program. Also on Saturday, a Families Helping Families drop-off site will be held at the Wonder Works store in Freshfields Farm Village on Kiawah.

"I know people like to go out with their families and go shopping and show their kids what the spirit is all about which is giving to kids, giving to families that really need it at the holiday time," Matt DiLucia said.
