Richland County lawmaker wants election head fired

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Republican Rep. Nathan Ballentine has become the first member of the Richland County legislative delegation to call for the firing of the county's election director.

Ballentine says his constituents are angry that some of them had to wait for hours on Election Day to vote and no apologies will fix that.

During a public hearing Monday, Richland County Elections and Voter Registration Director Lillian McBride said a half-dozen times she was sorry for the Election Day mess. But McBride did not answer repeated questions about why the county sent fewer voting machines to precincts for the 2012 election it they did in 2010.

The Richland County Election Board met Thursday and got advice that they could fire McBride, but took no action.

The delegation hired McBride a year ago.
