Charleston, S.C. (WCIV) -- Melted vinyl and scorched brick are all that's left of one section of unit G at Emmanuel Morris Brown Ebenezer Apartments.

"The floor was hot, you couldn't even walk on the floors. By the time I looked around to make sure everything wasn't on fire in the kitchen, you could see the smoke coming out from under the floor," said a woman who did not want to be identified.

She said once her son smelled smoke, she grabbed both of her young sons and ran down the stairs from her second floor apartment.

"It was like an angel was waiting for us to get down the steps, before the flames started shooting through the windows and the doors," said the woman.

The woman said she believes the fire started in the apartment below hers.

According to the Lowcountry Red Cross, five apartments in the unit were damaged, one of the apartments completely destroyed. The Red Cross said children lived in each of the apartments.

"Everything is mush and I don't have anything, my boys don't have anything. I'm trying to see what I can collect, so they will have something to wear, but it's just crazy right now," said the woman.

Samanda Hunter also lives on the second floor of the G building. She wasn't home at the time, but arrived to see a firefighter's ladder in her window.

"My living room is completely gone and the hallways and the bedroom, there is smoke damage all over," said Hunter.

Hunter said she is still in shock, and it's been hard trying to explain it to her children.

"My daughter she's 4, she's worrying about her babies getting burned up. My son he was crying a little bit but he's okay," said Hunter.

Both women said they thank God for protecting them and their children from the fire.

The James Island Fire Department is still investigating what caused the fire.
