North Charleston businessman on trial for alleged Iran exports

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- A North Charleston businessman is going on trial in federal court this week on charges of illegally exporting goods to Iran.

Federal prosecutors also say Markos Baghdasarian lied to federal agents about trying to get South Carolina products into Iran. His jury trial opens on Monday.

It's against the law to trade with Iran without special permission from the government. Federal law also requires exporters to file forms saying where their shipments are going.

Prosecutors say aviation lubricating oil was illegally shipped to Iran through two men working with Baghdasarian. He faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

Former South Carolina U.S. Attorney Bart Daniel is defending Baghdasarian.
