DETROIT (WCIV) -- Former Charleston County School District Superintendent Dr. Maria Goodloe-Johnson has passed away after a battle with lung cancer at the age of 55.

Most recently she served as the Deputy Chancellor for Instructional Support and Educational Accountability for the state of Michigan.

The school district released this statement Wednesday night:

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I inform you of the passing of Dr. Maria Goodloe-Johnson, former Charleston County School District Superintendent. Dr. Goodloe-Johnson unselfishly served CCSD from Fall 2003 until Spring 2007.

"As we mourn the loss of our friend and former leader, I hope you find comfort in knowing that she was an unwavering  advocate for education, and committed to ensuring that all children were afforded the opportunity to the best education possible," said Dr. Nancy J. McGinley, CCSD Superintendent. "We are forever indebted to her for building a strong foundation for change. Dr. Goodloe-Johnson will truly be missed," McGinley continued.

I ask that you keep Dr. Goodloe-Johnson's family in your thoughts and prayers. As we learn of final arrangements, we will share them with you."
