SC Gov. responds to Colbert's Senate appointment tweets

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Comedian Stephen Colbert has taken to Twitter to get put his name in the running for Jim DeMint's open U.S. Senate seat.

In the hours since his show, The Colbert Report, aired Thursday night on Comedy Central, Colbert has instructed his following of nearly 4.3 million people on Twitter to "Tweet (Nikki Haley) and tell her why I belong in the U.S. Senate."

"I wouldn't just block legislation, I'd body check it," he added.

The tweets are marked with the hashtag #SenatorColbert.

Gov. Nikki Haley, who has to appoint someone to DeMint's seat, responded on her Facebook page.

"Stephen, thank you for your interest in South Carolina's U.S. Senate seat and for the thousands of tweets you and your fans sent me. But you forget one thing, my friend," she wrote. "You didn't know our state drink. Big, big mistake."

The post included a link to her appearance on The Colbert Report.

Colbert asked in another tweet, "Could our better tomorrow be... tomorrow?"

It appears at this time, Haley is not entertaining the idea.
