MT. PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- For some, it's the most wonderful time of the year, but for others it can be the most challenging. For those people, East Cooper Community Outreach has a way to help.
"We have a Christmas program for needy families and families who are lacking resources this time of year, it's called Adopt a Family," said Jack Little, Executive Director at ECCO. "And we have families who apply and pre-qualify and then they are adopted over the internet by some of the great people here in the East Cooper area."
The generosity comes in all shapes and sizes from individuals, companies, student clubs, and even tennis groups all wanting to help.
"This is our fourth year of doing this and each year we have been able to help more than the last year," said Stacy Passailaigue, Executive Assistant at ECCO. "Last year we helped 135 families, we are already up to 110 this year with 80 of those already being adopted, so we feel like we are on track to meet or better last year's goal."
Those on the receiving end are always very grateful.
"One lady just burst out crying because she couldn't believe that someone was actually going to help her at this time of the year and it ended up our volunteer started crying too with her, so it's a very special time," said Little.
The family wish lists are posted on ECCO's website.
"This is just that one extra little thing that we can take off their plate and give the kids a nice Christmas," said Passailaigue.
For ECCO, it's all about helping neighbors.
