NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- The Publix at Palmetto Pavilion in North Charleston dealt with a malfunctioning refrigeration system on Saturday after copper was stolen from the unit.

Publix spokesman Brenda Reed said employees noticed low refrigeration levels when they opened the store Saturday morning.

Employees saw that the refrigeration system had been tampered with on the roof of the building.

According to police, $500 worth of copper was stolen, but the total loss from the theft is unknown.

According to Reed, refrigeration trucks were brought in to save perishable food items, but some food did have to be thrown away.
