Charleston, S.C. (WCIV) -- Going with the flow of traffic is something endurance runner Chris Nicholas is not used to. Now on a bike he checks his mirrors constantly.

"(I check my mirrors often,) especially if I'm crossing traffic," said Nicholas.

Still wearing running shoes, Nicholas plans to finish the trip he started on foot, from Portland, Maine, to Portland, Ore.

"This time I set out to be the first person in history to run across the country twice in one year. Unfortunately, I'm on the bike now. I had an injury and decided instead of stopping I could get on the bike," said Nicholas.

Nicholas said at the beginning of the year he became the 30th person to run solo across America. Upon finishing the trip from Washington, D.C. to Santa Monica, Calif., he decided to try again, but knee pain is keeping him off his feet and on the bike.

"It will take me about 5 1/2 months to get to Portland, Ore. So, I will be out here during the holidays. Christmas is coming up and I'll be away from my family but you continue and you continue to raise money for charity," said Nicholas.

His three charities of choice are  the Wounded Warrior Project, the Make-a-Wish Foundation, and St. Jude's Children's Hospital.

"They are charities that most anybody has either been touched by in some way or relates to," said Nicholas.

On this second trip, not even Hurricane Sandy will stop him, he said.

"Going through the hurricane and the weather, it also gave me the opportunity to see the devastation and see the people that were displaced from the storm," said Nicholas.

Nicholas said he hopes to be in the Florida Keys by Christmas.
