CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- They had to get out of bed early, but at least they could stay in their pajamas.

The 5th annual Charleston 5K Pajama Run raised money for the Hollings Cancer Center this weekend and all the money that was raised was donated towards research that focuses on cancers below the waist.

Organizers said many of the participants have either been impacted by cancer personally or are running in honor of family members, co-workers or friends to raise awareness.

"I think it was mostly average folks, you know, they probably were weekend runner types," said Todd Trevillian, Executive Director of the Pajama Run. "We had a couple runners that you can call city class, or world class runners, but for the most part it was people that ran a little bit on the weekends but just wanted to support a good cause."

"The reason I'm involved is the reason most people on the council are involved; and that's for awareness, and fundraising, and participating in events like this," said  Tim Walter, with the Hollings Citizen Advisory Council.

Over 400 participants were out at Joe Riley Stadium Saturday morning, and some even brought their pups along in their own pajamas.

"I'm getting a lot of comments like 'it was the best energy we've ever had' and a lot of people have just, you know, really went out of their way to wear wild costumes," said Trevillian. "It was just a great day, great weather, and a really great turnout."
