Ex-Maryland coach establishes Citadel scholarship

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Former Maryland head football coach Ralph Friedgen got his start as a fulltime assistant at The Citadel and has decided to give something back to the Bulldogs.

The school said Wednesday that Friedgen established the Ralph & Gloria Friedgen Scholarship that will go to an offensive player starting next season.

Friedgen was at The Citadel from 1973-79, serving under head coaches Bobby Ross and Art Baker.

Friedgen became Maryland's head coach after the 2000 season and went 75-50 there over 10 seasons. He says he enjoyed coaching at the Citadel and has decided to retire in Charleston.

Citadel athletic director Larry Leckonby said he was grateful the Friedgens chose to remember the school in this fashion.
