Red Cross recognizes hero for fire victims

MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (WCIV) – Fire victims can be left without a home, memories and potentially so much more. The Red Cross is always ready to help people back to their feet, but they can't always do it alone — sometimes it takes a hero.

Carolyn Hunter was recognized Wednesday outside of the McDonald's she has franchised. The Moncks Corner mayor, fire chief, and Red Cross officials presented her with a plaque for sponsoring twelve families in 2011.

"Hopefully others will want to be like you," Mayor William Peagler said.

On average it takes the red cross $1,250 to assist a family of four.

"She ended up surprising us saying, 'I want to sponsor 12 families,' which is the single biggest gift to the Heroes For Fire Victims Campaign," Paul Heinauer said.

Replenishing disaster funds is not always easy for the Red Cross. They enlist donors to help.

"We respond to a lot of calls throughout the year and the problem we have is after we put the fire out there's always the devastation that's left for the families in involved," Fire Chief David Miller said. "Without Carolyn and others in the community that have donated to this program it wouldn't happen."

The McDonald's franchisee says she feels is grateful for the honor.

"We all have a responsibility to help when we can. When you know you have the ability to do something to make someone else's life a bit easier then you really should do it," Hunter said.
