CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Michael Metzler stood with his head bowed as his charge of attempted murder was read.
According to court documents on the night of the alleged attack, 29-year-old Metzler was holding a metal pipe when he began threatening and shouting at the victim, saying he was going to beat him in retaliation for an argument that took place earlier inside a Folly Beach restaurant.
The victim told police he tried to walk away when Metzler ran at him and hit him in the head. Witnesses told police the victim was on the ground, unconscious, when Metzler hit him again with the pipe.
"Mr. Metzler is an Army Special Forces Veteran and is currently employed at Speedy Auto on James Island where he is a manager and very well liked," said his attorney Katie Perkins.
Metzler's attorney told the judge bond should be granted because of his strong community ties. The judge set bond at $80,000 then heard from friends of the victim.
"I feel that he should not be let out on bond," said a family friend of the victim. The friend, who told the judge she is in the medical field, says the victim is doing better than most with his injury.
"I feel like he's lucky to be alive. I think that it speaks to the violence this person is capable of and that he is a violent and dangerous person and that he should be kept from the public from the safety of the community and public at large," said the friend.
