NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey is willing to do whatever it takes to make sure a massacre doesn't happen in his city.

Mayor Summey says he wants to hire at least one police officer for every elementary school in North Charleston.

Officials say the idea could cost more than $1 million. Mayor Summey says he will make every effort to raise the money.

"I could not live with myself if something like Sandy Hook happened in North Charleston," Mayor Summey said.

20 children and 6 adults were killed during a shooting in Connecticut on Friday. Police say Adam Lanza killed his own mother before turning the weapon on himself inside the school in Sandy Hook.
